Forward planning and careful organization can reduce the stress associated with moving a house. Presented here is a checklist to help you through at least six weeks leading to your moving-:
Six weeks before you move
- Confirm the actual date of moving
- If you are living in a rental house, notify the landlord of your intention to move
- Confirm with your home insurance company to ensure that you have cover from the day you move into your new home.
- Get quotes from multiple home removal companies. Also ask for references and confirm the limits of their insurances.
- If you will not be using professional moving companies, ask friends in advance for assistance.
- Arrange for extra storage if this will be necessary
- Inform your utility companies of your intention to move, giving them the specific dates.
- Start doing away with the items you no longer need. Sort them out and decide the ones to be taken to charity shops, car boot sales, or given for free to friends and relatives.
- If you will be purchasing new items such as electronics and furniture, order them and arrange for them to be delivered when you move into your new home.
Two weeks before moving
- Pack non-essential items like books and seasonal cloths in suitable boxes.
- If you are moving out of the area, be sure to deregister from your doctor, dentist or optician.
- Inform the post office of your impending change of address so that mails may be forwarded when necessary.
- Make a list of those whom you wish to inform that you have moved and send them e-cards informing them of your new address
- If you will be using the services of a moving company, make the final arrangements with them and agree on the exact date and time for the move.
- Find time and collect keys of your new home from the estate agents
- Let the bank know of any changes so that they can redirect standing orders and debits.
- This checklist will save you from a lot of troubles and worries when you have to move.
